Lise Patry, B.A.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), LL.B., ICD.D, is a lawyer and former business executive with a strong background in technology and over 20 years’ business and legal experience in the public and private sectors.
She offers virtual counsel services and specialized expertise in transaction contracts; technology licensing; federal government / public administration legal matters; government procurement/bidding and tendering; strategic business agreements; private and public sector general business law and corporate governance. Ms. Patry is fluently bilingual in English and French.
Education and Work Experience
After obtaining her chemical engineering degree at the University of Ottawa in 1988, Ms. Patry joined Andersen Consulting (now called Accenture), a global IT consulting practice, and worked on a number of IT implementation projects for Canadian organizations including the Ottawa General Hospital, Canada Post, Scarborough Hospital and the University of Ottawa.
Ms. Patry left IT consulting to obtain her law degree at McGill University in Montreal in 1991. After receiving her LL.B., she worked in the intellectual property group at Gowlings, a national law firm, in technology licensing, copyright and trademark laws.
In 1998, she joined an early stage high tech company called JDS Fitel which later became JDS Uniphase Corporation, a global manufacturing organization in the high-tech sector, as a contracts lawyer supporting both its global sales and purchasing groups. While at JDS Uniphase, Ms. Patry worked on a wide variety of domestic and international commercial agreements to support the evolving business needs, developed a number of corporate standard terms and conditions templates and was eventually appointed as lead counsel to the Global Supply Chain Management group.
In 2002, Ms. Patry joined the then newly-formed Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), the federal Crown corporation created after 9/11 to take over security screening in 89 Canadian airports. As the first commercial lawyer hired by this start-up organization, Ms. Patry helped structure the organization’s first procurement and contracting framework and supported various public procurement initiatives involving a wide range of goods and services such as simple to complex goods and services, specialized capital equipment and administrative and specialized IT applications. During the 12 years she worked at CATSA she was promoted to a variety of roles and led several different functions, including procurement and contracting, legal services, corporate secretariat (corporate governance), the technology branch (screening technology, IT, information management and help desk), passenger claims, regulatory affairs and access to information and privacy.
Her diverse experience uniquely positions Lise Patry to offer practical, business focused legal advice to clients operating in a wide range of industries (ie. services, technology, government) as virtual corporate counsel or legal advisor in the areas of public procurement, commercial contracting and corporate governance.
Directorships, Memberships and Associations
Lise Patry is an active contributor to the Ottawa community. She is the Vice-President of Ottawa Women’s Business Network, Ottawa’s oldest and largest women’s association. She has been a director on the Board of the Gloucester Housing Corporation, one of Ottawa’s largest social housing corporations, and Chair of the Governance Committee and previously served on the Board of the Ottawa Humane Society and Garderie Bernadette, a University of Ottawa daycare center.
Ms. Patry also devotes time to the economic empowerment of women through her work with WBE Canada where she performs outreach and certification assessor roles. Lise is currently participating on several federal government procurement advisory boards as WBE’s representative with a view to helping improve federal procurement practices and templates.
Ms. Patry is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Institute of Corporate Directors.
